Holcot Centre, Student Accommodation, Moulton College
This project consists of a 6no. bespoke, campus based, student accommodation blocks. It is located on the Moulton College Holcot Campus in Moulton.
BCAL were appointed as civil and structural designers on the project and were involved from planning stage to completion.
Originally, the client’s engineer, proposed to use deep, bored piles for the foundations but this was found to be an expensive solution. BCAL carefully studied the ground investigation report and in conjunction with a piling specialist concluded that the most cost effective and appropriate structural solution for the foundations was vibro compacted stone columns. This solution saved the client over £100,000 and allowed traditional strip footings to be used on top of the treated ground.
The site was sloping and very careful consideration of the platform levels and surrounding embankments was necessary.
The accommodation block were formed with load bearing masonry and pre-cast concrete floors.
BCAL have worked with the college for 20 years and also designed the access roads for the whole campus together with the underground drainage system and its outfall to the watercourse.
The centre provides outstanding student accommodation for the expanding campus.
