The council bought Stirling House, a three-storey office building to address a shortage of primary pupil places. Northampton Primary Academy Trust will run the new 1,300 sq m school.
It's very common practice in Scandinavian countries and the States to convert offices and shopping malls into schools. Building a new primary school from scratch would cost about £6m, not including the cost of purchasing a site, whereas it cost £1.3m to convert Stirling House and £1.6m to purchase it.
BCAL advised on the potential for adding a play area on top of the roof, the load capacity of the existing floors and the structural work necessary to accommodate the proposed alterations.
The drainage and external works were redesigned, converting the car park into playground area.
