Awarded through the Smarte East Framework agreement this £3mscheme at South Hill Primary School, Hemel Hempstead, consisted of the design and build of a three storey classroom block along with external works to provide a new car park and playground.
Works were phased to reduce disruption to the live school environment, phase 1, which began in April 2014 involved extensive landscaping works to provide a new, larger playground and sport field area complete with two MUGA’s and activity equipment. Minor alterations to the existing school were also carried out during this phase along with the provision of a temporary classroom block which was later utilised during phase 2.
Phase 2 involved the erection of the new classroom block pictured above. The three storey structure, (one storey in a part basement), was constructed with a steel frame and a structural insulated panelling (SIP) inner leaf surrounded by colourful Trespa cladding, solar panels on the roof and economic air pumps throughout combine to provide the building with an impressive energy rating. Linked to the existing school, the new extension now provides an additional 8 classrooms, staff offices, toilet blocks and a new main reception and entrance.
BCAL designed a much more economic and buildable solution from that put forward by the client’s team at tender stage. Traditional footings were utilised in lieu of piling on a steep bank and normal steel beams positioned on the classroom wall line in lieu of the specified, expensive, imported beams.
