Providing efficient and well engineered design solutions

Leonardo Centre Uppingham School

A fine balance between the imaginative use of space and a restricted budget was required to encourage student creativity in this new art design and technology facility for the school.

A 15º glazed and sloping North end to the structure achieves North lighting, preferred by artists and safe for the operation of machinery. Moment frames and connections are used to eliminate the requirement for trusses and vertical bracing, assisting a crisp detail design solution.

A further key challenge was developing the structural steelwork for the innovative staircases from the architect’s conceptual thoughts.

The project demonstrates, we believe, BCAL’s ability to work well within the team framework of an innovative architect, knowledgeable client and enthusiastic contractor.
